It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath.

Death has never been busier, and will become busier still.

By her brother's graveside, Liesel's life is changed when she picks up a single object, partially hidden in the snow. It is The Gravedigger's Handbook, left there by accident, and it is her first act of book thievery.

So begins a love affair with books and words, as Liesel, with the help of her accordion-playing foster father, learns to read. Before the World War II starts, Liesel Meminger arrives in Munich to meet her foster parents some hours after witnessing her brother's death. Her new parents teach her to embrace life, but more importantly, to understand words and how powerful they can be.

This book is beautifully written and is all about words. The story is focused on a poor orphan girl during the World War II but it could describe anyone else in any other time. It is narrated by Death, the chapters are quite short and introduced in a way that keeps you wondering. The only thing I did not appreciate as much was the ending that was left for the reader to imagine. I wish I knew what happened without a doubt. "I have hated the words and I have loved them and I hope I have made them right".
