The patrician is being poisoned somehow by someone, and Vimes has no idea what to do with the clues they have. But he knows poisoners can no longer get away with crime, and finds a dwarf to help him get started with a new forensic toxicology department at the Watch.
I can't help but draw some parallels between what happened in real life to forensic toxicology with Alexander Gettler and the beginning of this book, I think Pratchett got some inspiration from those events. But more importantly, I now understand why some people think the Watch books are the best from Discworld. I still prefer Death but this is a great book, it focus on feminism, discrimination, sexuality, religion, life, freedom, slaves, kindness... kids should discuss this in school.
