I first came upon this novel purely by accident, I was doing an evening class course at a local technical college, and I went into the college library to check out useful books. I was surprised to see ordinary library books and chuffed to see a Ray Bradbury volume. Since discovering Bradbury I'd become an addict scouring every available source for my fix, this was an particular delight as I'd never heard of or seen it anywhere else. I was living in digs and decided to start it one evening with the consideration of simply reading some before going to bed as I had to work the next day. However I couldn't put it down such that I stopped checking the time, and just had to keep reading until I had finished it completely. A contracapa deste livro diz que é uma história de crimes e mistérios com um toque de literatura fantástica, então achei que iria gostar. Começa com um jovem escritor, inspirado no próprio Bradbury, que escuta a frase "a morte é um negócio solitário" e fica com isso na cabeça. Quando algumas pessoas velhas ou solitárias começam a morrer ou a sumir do lugar onde esse escritor vive, ele vê um mistério e resolve investigar.

Apesar da dedicatória do livro a Raymond Chandler, Ross Macdonald, Dashiel Hammet e James M. Cain, o escritor/investigador não tem nada de Marlowe ou de Continental Op. É uma pessoa sensível, sonhadora, nada hard boiled, e o mais perto de femme fatale que aparece aqui é uma senhora.

Além dele, outros personagens interessantes são o detetive da polícia que vive numa casa que parece uma selva, o barbeiro que não sabe cortar cabelo e que sempre …
