My favourite genre is fantasy but I also love comedy, which means I am a big fan of Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Neil Gaiman and CK McDonnell. Truth is, I'll read anything!

I have not read all the plays by Wilde, but this is not as funny as others, although it is witty and highly critical of the british upper class. The play focus on the discrimination that women of the time had to endure while the men that brought their ruin were free to do as they wished. Some of its witty lines were later recycled in other plays, but the main plot takes a while to take off. I am glad the end of this one is as "fictional" as it gets: the good characters are given a happy ending.

Marple's nephew offers her a holiday in London and she decides to go to Bertram's Hotel, a place where she used to stay when she was younger. While staying there, Marple notices that something odd is happening as there are a lot of people at the hotel that look alike. She cannot help herself and eavesdrops and observes the other guests as much as she can.
This story is slightly different as we do not know all that Marple knows and sees, plus the plot seems to come out of a spy story. I enjoyed it, but the end is both surprising and slightly disappointing. I was expecting more out of this one.

Actress Jane Wilkinson is married to Lord Edgware, but she wants a divorce as soon as possible so she can marry again. Wilkinson asks Poirot to help her convince Lord Edgware to give her a divorce, otherwise she will go to his house and kill him. Things get complicated when Poirot realises Lord Edgware agrees with the divorce, but is still murdered that night.
I enjoyed this story because it is very different from the usual murder plot. We know how the murder will be executed from early on, but the obvious culprit has an alibi, which makes the reader look for other options. Having said that, I think it is easier to understand who did what because of that.

Agatha Raisin sold her successful PR firm in London to enjoy an early retirement in the country. At first she likes the idea, but then boredom takes over and even though she cannot cook she enters the local quiche competition. Turns out the competition was rigged, and things take a turn for worse when quiche judge Cummings-Browne is found dead after eating Raisin's poisoned quiche. Raisin has to confess she did not bake it, but bought it from a famous quicherie in London. Even though the death is ruled accidental, Raisin decides to investigate a little further because a murder would definitely cheer her up.
This book is the definition of "cosy mystery". A lovely village and nice neighbours that bring St. Mary Mead to mind, but Agatha Christie's Marple is as sweet as Raisin is direct and often rude. Raisin eventually tries to play nice, but it does not …

Lady Chiltern is married to Sir Robert and has very strict morals. In fact, she believes she could not love her husband if his behaviour was fraudulent, even if only once. Mrs. Cheveley, an old enemy of Lady Chiltern, attempts to blackmail Sir Robert into supporting a scheme to build a canal. Sir Robert does not know how to handle the problem since he has to choose between his career and the love of his life.
It seems everything Wilde has ever written is deliciously witty. I knew this story but I had never read the play and it is much funnier than I thought. The character of Lord Goring is perfect, and his relationship with his father results in the best dialogues. Interesting play that debates good character and past sins.

The four get together at the Worthing's country house and hilarity ensues.
This play is timeless and hilarious, I felt the urge to quote something on every page. My brother heard me laughing from another room, that is how much I enjoyed reading and listening to this. Wilde wrote witty and wonderful dialogues, this story gets me every time!

Review of "Oscar Wilde's The picture of Dorian Gray" on 'Goodreads'

Dorian Gray is a beautiful young man that has given a new life to the paintings of Basil Hallward. While posing for Basil, Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton - a close friend of Hallward - who has very particular views on society. Gray realises his beauty has opened many doors for him and those doors will certainly close as he grows old and wrinkled. When the painting is finished, Gray says he would give his soul for his picture to grow old instead of him.
I tend to think classics are boring and it takes some effort on my part to read them. However, Oscar Wilde is brilliant and witty, and the theme behind this story is timeless, which makes it an easy read. At first I was bored by Lord Henry's unending philosophies, but once I understood how deeply they influenced Gray I went back to read them carefully. …

However, Oscar Wilde is brilliant and witty, and the theme behind this story is timeless, which makes it an easy read. At first I was bored by Lord Henry's unending philosophies, but once I understood how deeply they influenced Gray I went back to read them carefully. Gray decides to take advantage of the fact that nothing can change his good looks and gives himself to every whim, while his painting keeps changing to reflect what his soul looks like sin after sin. Gray is obsessed with himself, but the lesson I keep after reading this book is that every human being has a soul and it is the only thing we should care to make beautiful.
In the preface, Wilde writes that "The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely. All art is quite useless”. I am forced to disagree, this book is a useful work of art that I now admire, as it got me thinking of the wonderful gift it is to be human and to be able to choose my fate as I wish.

This story takes place in St. Mary Mead where the once famous actress Marina Gregg has come to live. Surprisingly, Heather Badcock dies after having drunk a poisoned cocktail at a party organised by Marina Gregg. Shortly before her death, Heather was telling Marina how much she admired her and how they had met years ago. The mystery deepens as the death of Heather seems to be accidental.
I actually solved this crime, which rarely happens when I read Christie's stories. For some reason, I found this one very easy to picture in my mind. I love how Christie manages to send clues everywhere and turn every character into a suspect. It is always a joy to read Miss Marple's mysteries.

Right before Christmas, a friend of Miss Marple's sees a man strangling a woman on a train passing by. She does not see his face but is completely sure she witnessed a murder. Since the police did not find a body, she thinks it is best to leave it in the capable hands of her friend. Miss Marple studies the train's tracks and enlists the help of Lucy Eylesbarrow. The two clever ladies will have to solve the mystery and find the body.
I enjoyed this story very much. We know a woman was murdered by a man from the start, but the whole plot is very intricate and then suddenly very simple. Christie's stories are always engaging and surprising, as they should be.

I am very happy with the last book of the Night Huntress series. Some bits felt rushed and I think the story could have been better developed. For example, I would like to understand Katie's abilities better and see Cat finally growing up enough for Bones to trust her with his thoughts. All in all the end was very satisfying and the author did a brilliant job of not dragging these characters until there was no story left. The prologue set me on the wrong track and I thought I had half the book figured out, so it was good to realise I hadn't but it also raised some questions that …

Also, Vlad is missing from most of the book although most of the other characters appear for their bow out; for some reason the Vlad I love is the one in Cat and Bones and not the one that appears in his own spin-off. I also missed a laughing out scene like the first books had, but mostly I am very happy with the end Frost gave her characters. I feel happy and not sad that this series is over.

I enjoyed the book but I read it as a play, and not as a crime fiction novel. Nevertheless, I am confused by the reading order as Poirot refers to the "killing of Lord Edgware" in this story, and that book is supposed to be the 9th of the series whereas this …

A business man called Rex Fortescue is poisoned to death and it is found that he had rye in his pocket. Gladys, the maid of the house, once worked for Miss Marple, which spikes her curiosity and makes her travel there to help with the investigation. After rye and bread and honey are brought into the crime scene, Marple suggests that the detective should enquire about blackbirds.
Even though the mystery is easier to solve than usual, it is very interesting that Christie was able to build a solid crime around a childhood nursery rhyme. Very entertaining, as always.
