My favourite genre is fantasy but I also love comedy, which means I am a big fan of Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Neil Gaiman and CK McDonnell. Truth is, I'll read anything!

Review of 'Save a Truck, Ride a Redneck' on 'Goodreads'

Carl and Marianne were high school sweethearts, but Marianne breaks Carl's heart when she moves away to be a lawyer. After a few years she comes back to realise maybe she misses home more than she initially thought. This is a short nice read, possibly perfect for a commute.

Stephanie is chasing another FTA when Lula decides to commandeer an ice-cream truck that is not only carrying ice cream but also a frozen dead man, who happens to be covered in chocolate. Rangeman is in charge of protecting the ice cream factory that owns the truck, which means there is a lot of Ranger in this book. Stephanie even spends some time at Disney, which means this is a fun read great for lazy days when you do not want to think much about anything, just smile and giggle at the antics of all the characters.

Review of 'This Is Going to Hurt' on 'Goodreads'

The author is naturally funny and makes bad things much easier to read because of the way he frames and comments them. Nevertheless, the book was way more insightful than I expected and the end really took me by surprise. A great read that I have to recommend to anyone willing to know more about the NHS and probably every public healthcare system.

Review of "Neil Gaiman's a Study in Emerald" on 'Goodreads'

A wonderful delight for Gaiman and Conan Doyle fans

I enjoyed the drawings a lot and the little publicity notes at the beginning of each chapter. As the name foreshadows, a "study in Emerald" follows a "study in scarlet" with a detective and his ex-military friend investigating a revenge kill. Fortunately there is no lengthy weird throwback, just the case being solved. I liked the twist at the end as well!

Stephen Briggs: Terry Pratchett's Maskerade (1998, S. French)

Review of "Terry Pratchett's Maskerade" on 'Goodreads'

Pratchett can write anything, even a mystery about a ghost that lives inside Ankh-Morpork's opera house. And about making your own path in life and be yourself, which is another great theme for the most famous witches of the Discworld. I enjoyed this book very much, even knowing I would, which means it met my high expectations. There are laughs, deaths and a lot of unnecessary drama.

Review of 'The princess bride' on 'Goodreads'

A different (probably better) fairytale

I knew the movie but I had never read the book. I enjoyed it much more than I could have anticipated. The characters are adorable (even the bad ones!), the dialogues extremely quotable, and the author's messages never failed to make me smile. Lovely surprise and a must read! Even for adults.

Dresden keeps battling his demons and feelings of hopelessness, but decides to help Injun Joe to investigate some supernatural murders. The art of this graphic novel was amazing, I liked the story even though not as much as the art. The moments Injun Joe shapeshifts and the dog men appear are beautifully drawn.

J. K. Rowling: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (2007)

Review of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' on 'Goodreads'

In the previous book Harry is taught by Dumbledore and learns what he must do to finally kill Voldemort. He accepts the task Dumbledore gives him, and together with Ron and Hermione searches for the remaining horcruxes to destroy/kill them.

Even though this was the last book in the series, it was the one I remembered the least. For most of it, it curiously felt like I was reading it for the first time. It springs into action right in the first pages, there is a great airborne battle before the wedding. But then it slows down so much I had to switch to the audiobook version (read by Stephen Fry) so I could listen while doing other stuff and feel less bored by it. Harry redeems himself in the end, but for most of it he is dim-witted. Fortunately the book picks it pace again towards the end, and …

Rincewind is living happily on an island, which means something disastrous is about to happen (to him). And indeed, he is sent to a faraway land in need of a "great wizard". In that continent Rincewind meets Cohen the Barbarian and tries to stay away from trouble, but trouble enjoys his company.

Pratchett always knows how to make me live in interesting times through his writing. Another fantastic book, and to think I did not even like Rincewind to start with!...

John M. Zakour: The Raven Haired Rogue (Paperback, 2015, Serealities Press)

Review of 'The Raven Haired Rogue' on 'Goodreads'

Zachary Nixon Johnson, the last private investigator on Earth, has another interplanetary issue on his hands. Merinda is a member of the High Council of Mars and is visiting the Earth. Someone wants her dead, and if Merinda dies the commercial relations between Mars and Earth will be seriously affected.

The audiobook version is much better than the kindle one, but since it was written for the readers to choose Zach's course of action, the moments he pauses to detail his options are odd and maybe they could have been edited out as they feel disconnected from the story. However, the voice actors did a beautiful job.

J. K. Rowling: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Paperback, 2013, Scholastic Inc.)

Review of 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' on 'Goodreads'

Voldemort is getting stronger and the authorities have yet to find him, which makes politicians very anxious and given into stupid popularity contests. People are living in a constant state of fear, but in Hogwarts everything seems to be more or less in order. Harry is now captain of the Quidditch team, has a very helping hand at Potions and has private lessons with Dumbledore.

This was always one of my favourite from the series, even though I couldn't remember it clearly having read it more than 10 years ago. It was a treat to revisit "the half-blood prince" and be less worried about what could happen, savouring the words and storytelling. I didn't remember Ginny being such a great character nor Tonks being so miserable. Funny enough, I could still remember the words of this dialogue and where it took place: "maybe he — Snape — didn’ wan’ ter …

Review of 'The tales of Beedle the Bard' on 'Goodreads'

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It introduces five short fairytales of the wizard world, and the stories are nice but the best part are the annotations by Dumbledore. They made me chuckle and were surprisingly witty, this tiny book is definitely worth it! (Plus, when buying it you are donating to Lumos).

Review of 'Mortal Danger (The World of the Lupi, Book 2)' on 'Goodreads'

Lily Yu is attacked by a demon at her sister's wedding and Rule gets more anxious than ever regarding her safety. Lily is not happy about having him around all the time while she searches for the staff and Harlowe.

I liked this book very much, usually the second in a series is not as good as the first and I felt that at the beginning but it gets better around 20%. Yu's world is not as big as she though, and expanding universe with parallel worlds, gods, demons and wars grabbed my attention. Cynna is a great new character, and Cullen continues to be my favourite. I am also happy that Rule ends this story in a totally different state of mind. I am looking forward to read the next one!

reviewed Tempting danger by Eileen Wilks (Berkley sensation romantic suspense)

Eileen Wilks: Tempting danger (2004, Berkley Pub. Group)

When San Diego police detective Lily Yu enlists the help of a werewolf to catch …

Review of 'Tempting danger' on 'Goodreads'

Beautiful introduction to a whole new world of werewolves

Lily Yu is a cop but also a sensitive, she can feel magic. When she starts investigating the murder of a man by a werewolf, she soon realises something is not right, even though the clues point to one of the main werewolves in town, a prince among the lupi.

This feels like a first book to a series where things are still being tried and settled, but it is already very solid. All the different types of magic, rituals and weird knowledge are very well thought and the solving of different crimes plays a secondary role to the explaining of this new world of magic, realms and gods. What a great introduction!

Review of 'The trouble with twelfth grave' on 'Goodreads'

The end is near but also far away

Reyes is lost to his god incarnation and there's an open door to Hell in their living room. Charley hasn't slept in a long time but there isn't time to sleep when Hell breaks lose (quite literally).

This is one of my favourites from the series. It is funny and fast paced, but Charley is more focused on what she has to do while she learns more about herself. Cookie is always awesome, as well as Reyes and Garrett. Great addition to the series and I cannot wait for the next book.
