My favourite genre is fantasy but I also love comedy, which means I am a big fan of Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Neil Gaiman and CK McDonnell. Truth is, I'll read anything!

Mark Carwadine: Last Chance To See (2009, Harpercollins Reference) 5 stars

Review of 'Last Chance To See' on 'Goodreads'

5 stars

Wonderfully written book about endangered species and our world

Writer Douglas and zoologist Carwardine travelled around the world looking for some endangered species in the 80s, and we get to live that experience through Douglas. I don't know why this book only connected now, I read it about 20 years ago and I totally missed how fascinating it is. If you like animals and sometimes feel depressed about being human, or simply want to enjoy some superb witty writing, this book is for you. And for everyone who cares.

Chelsea Handler: My Horizontal Life (2007, Penguin Random House) 4 stars

Review of 'My Horizontal Life' on 'Goodreads'

4 stars

Given the topic, it is hard to argue that the book could be longer but I was enjoying myself and I could have read more. I was hoping for some laughs and I got them. Chelsea is funny without trying hard, albeit a little self-deprecating. Great read to get you in a good mood, and sometimes a disgusting one too!

Christopher Moore: A Dirty Job (Paperback, 2007, Harper Paperbacks) 3 stars

Asher's wife dies when she gives birth to their daughter, and Charlie learns he is now a collector of souls, sort of one of Death's helper. He wasn't ready to be a single parent, let alone someone who stalks people on the verge of dying, but for his baby he is ready to rally again.

This is a fun book, it is compelling at first but then plot development slows down a lot. Half way through the book I though about giving up, but close to the the middle it feels like the author found his story again, and the book became funny, and silly, and it was very easy to finish. Some dialogues are laugh out loud funny, and the descriptions of the fantastical parts of the story built great scenarios in my head. Having said that, the book could be shorter and there are way too many sentences …

Janet Evanovich: Dangerous Minds (Paperback, 2018, Bantam) 4 stars

Brilliant and boyishly charming, Emerson Knight likes nothing better than solving an unsolvable, improbable mystery. …

Review of 'Dangerous Minds' on 'Goodreads'

Knight feels adventure in the air when an old friend of his comes to see him all the way from Samoa because his island vanished. Moon does not really have a say in this as she is the designated driver and therefore a key piece of the group.

As the previous one, this book is fun and light hearted. Vernon and the monk act as a great comic relief and it is very relaxing to imagine all those different geographies they fly to. Fast paced and great to forget the outside world.

The heads on some corpses have gone missing and word on the street is that zombies have landed in Trenton. Diesel has landed too, which may or may not be connected to the zombie apocalypse.

These books are my go-to when I need to smile and take some time off of my brain. They are always fun, Stephanie and her friends and family never disappoint! The characters don't evolve much but it's not like I expect them to. It's just a fun, light hearted series and there's a particularly inspired car death!

Darynda Jones: Summoned to Thirteenth Grave (Paperback, 2019, St. Martin's Paperbacks) 5 stars

The end is nigh... More to the point, it is around the corner. And it just might be a very literal notion of Hell breaking loose.

The end of this series is definitely bittersweet. I started reading these books when I moved to a different country almost 10 years ago. Reading each chapter and discussing it with a group of perfect strangers (future Grimlets!) here on Goodreads was one of the best online experiences I've ever had! So even though this series ended on a high note and I never felt it boring, I still wish there was more. Thank you to everyone who made the reading of this series such an experience, thank you to the beautiful mind of [a:Darynda Jones|4175419|Darynda Jones|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1285278216p2/4175419.jpg] and thank you for not sending Ubie to Hell. What a ride this has been!

Do not fear the Reaper! ;)

Mary Roach: Grunt (2016) 4 stars

"'Grunt' tackles the science behind some of a soldier's most challenging adversaries-- panic, exhaustion, heat, …

Review of 'Grunt' on 'Goodreads'

4 stars

Mary Roach's curiosity is always something I'll be in awe of. She researches the weirdest subjects and I cannot believe how many people are okay with that. The best for us because this book is witty and funny, and sometimes touching. Even if you have no interest in war, the science behind men at war is weirdly compelling.

Kristen Painter: Miss Frost Ices The Imp: A Nocturne Falls Mystery (Jayne Frost) (Volume 2) (2016, Kristen Painter) 4 stars

Review of 'Miss Frost Ices The Imp: A Nocturne Falls Mystery (Jayne Frost) (Volume 2)' on 'Goodreads'

4 stars

Jayne is now manager of a Christmas shop at Nocturne Falls and during an estate sale she buys a small box. When she gets home her cat knocks the box down and it releases some magic that results in weird happenings in the town, which must be stopped.

In this story Jayne does not have exactly a mystery waiting to be solved, but it is still entertaining to read while she tries to bring everything back to normal. I have to say the cat is probably the most interesting turn of events, even if spider is so mellow it doesn't really feel like a cat. Another cozy reading, you know you won't have to think much about it and will be satisfied that no important character is going to drop dead unexpectedly.

Kristen Painter: Miss Frost Solves A Cold Case: A Nocturne Falls Mystery (Jayne Frost Book 1) (2016, Sugar Skull Books) 4 stars

Review of 'Miss Frost Solves A Cold Case: A Nocturne Falls Mystery (Jayne Frost Book 1)' on 'Goodreads'

4 stars

Jayne Frost, daughter of Jack Frost and niece of Santa Claus, is sent to Nocturne Falls to snoop around and discover why elves are missing from the local Christmas shop. Jayne has no intention of ever leaving the North Pole, but she is enthusiastic about her new job since she has never really settled anywhere in the family's business.

Even though the mystery is not that hard to crack, this book is the definition of a cozy mystery. The characters are very likeable, and it is easy to root for Jayne Frost. This is a great read for when you feel like you don't want to think too much and just let your imagination travel to the weird town of Nocturne Falls and its interesting citizens.

The patrician is being poisoned somehow by someone, and Vimes has no idea what to do with the clues they have. But he knows poisoners can no longer get away with crime, and finds a dwarf to help him get started with a new forensic toxicology department at the Watch.

I can't help but draw some parallels between what happened in real life to forensic toxicology with Alexander Gettler and the beginning of this book, I think Pratchett got some inspiration from those events. But more importantly, I now understand why some people think the Watch books are the best from Discworld. I still prefer Death but this is a great book, it focus on feminism, discrimination, sexuality, religion, life, freedom, slaves, kindness... kids should discuss this in school. Such a rich book to debate societies and humans' way of life. Definitely one of my favourites ever! Pratchett's imagination and …

Review of 'Siege' on 'Goodreads'

Abigail is in charge of controlling the shield but learns that she only has 20 days until it fails. I found the characters very confusing but I was amused during the whole story. My favourite moment was probably reading the sentence "There was no hope, the shield fell. Now there is.".

I liked the characters even though I can only name one or two. The beginning was a little confusing, then it got interesting by the final exam and then it became boring. It is connected to what is happening in the main Secret Wars story though since Valeria is the school's headmaster.

Because of the other Secret Wars' stories, I was not a fan of the Thors. However, this feels more like a detective story, CSI sort of thing. I was curious about the murders and probably because I don't follow Thor, I was surprised at every twist. This short story kept me engaged.

I think it's hard not to love Elsa, but she has some daddy issues! That little Deadpool cameo was pretty cool and I felt it could have been a series by itself. I enjoyed the first three much more than the last one, the end was sort of bad. I felt it was forced into being really deep, and in reality it was just mainly shallow.
