My favourite genre is fantasy but I also love comedy, which means I am a big fan of Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Neil Gaiman and CK McDonnell. Truth is, I'll read anything!

Review of 'Dead Beat' on 'Goodreads'

Harry Dresden has a lot in his hands. Some really powerful necromancers are trying to take over the world using some really nasty magic. Murphy does not know but she is also in danger of having her career destroyed unless Harry gets Marva something called the "Word of Kemmler" - Kemmler was the most powerful necromancer in the world. Harry also has to protect the really frightened and not-that-brave Butters that gets involved by chance, while the White Council is at war with the Red Court.

I do not think Jim Butcher is capable of writing a bad Harry Dresden story. This was compelling as ever, powerful crazy enemies, friends that cannot be called to help, intrigue, and even Harry's own free will was at stake. However, I felt the pace was broken multiple times and I did not really understand why. Every time Dresden got up to do something …

Review of 'Ms. Marvel' on 'Goodreads'

I took some time to read this volume because I wanted to understand if my nonexistent knowledge of what "Secret Wars" was could ruin this for me. Turns out that no, there is no way that this reading experience could be ruined by anything because it is a beautiful collection of Kamala doing what is right, growing up and understanding unconditional love. Probably the most lovely comics I will ever read.

Jim Butcher: Jim Butcher's the Dresden files (2008, Del Rey/Ballantine Books)

Review of "Jim Butcher's the Dresden files" on 'Goodreads'

I wasn't expecting to like this short story as much as I did. I read all four volumes at once and enjoyed both the drawings and the writing. Dresden is exactly how I imagined him to be, and the text was well written and witty. It actually made me giggle a couple of times. Murphy is not at all what I imagined her to be, but I guess her looks improve as the series goes on and she trusts Dresden more. Furthermore, she barely is part of this story so that is fine. This is a nice warm-up story to the series and the art is totally worth it.

John Scalzi: The Dispatcher (Hardcover, 2021, Subterranean)

Review of 'The Dispatcher' on 'Goodreads'

I had a great time listening to this. What happens when people ressuscitate if they are murdered and are able to remember and tell all about it? However, people stay dead if they die by disease or suicide. This idea was a fresh topic to me, and it is nicely written to be voiced by Zachary Quinto, who reminded me of Dresden's James Marsters. I enjoyed this a lot.

Review of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" on 'Goodreads'

I have watched the movie a couple of times and I had not fully understood the story until the book came my way. It is not like Michael C. Hall could voice Holly better than Audrey Hepburn but the book connected with me. Holly Golightly is a young woman who has no idea of her role in the world, but she knows she charms and entertains people, and that is how she is navigating through life. She meets a lot of people and her personality makes no one indifferent. A brief glimpse into the life of different people that care for each other, although they have not much in common except for memories they create together.

reviewed Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll by Harold Bloom (Bloom's modern critical interpretations)

Harold Bloom: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll (Hardcover, 2006, Chelsea House Publications)

Review of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll" on 'Goodreads'

I did not know the whole story in advance, but since it is popular to this day I decided to give it a go. Johansson does a wonderful job of voicing all the animals and is the main reason I gave it 3 stars. I cannot say I enjoyed the story very much, probably because it is very strange and gets weirder and weirder without being humorous. Maybe I should have read it as a child, as an adult I feel like I missed the whole point of the book.

Review of 'Too Lucky to Live' on 'Goodreads'

After a divorce that left her with nothing, Allie is living in a small house and riding the bus to save money to fix her car. While waiting for a bus, she helps a blind man that is startled in the middle of the road. Allie is so taken by Tom's looks that invites him to her home so she can cook the few groceries he has left. During that dinner, Allie and Tom find out he bought a winning ticket worth of 500 million dollars. Unfortunately, a lot of people are also aware of the fact.

I enjoyed this book for two reasons, the first is that the romance is solved in 10 pages (or less) and so the story is mostly focused on hiding from killers, finding bodies and counting friends and foes. The second is that Allie and Tom do not take anyone for granted and suspect …

Review of 'Lords and Ladies : (Discworld Novel 14)' on 'Goodreads'

Possibly my favourite novel of the Discworld yet. I love the witches and every time I read a story about them, it quickly becomes a favourite. So it is not surprising I fell in love with this one too. Moreover, this book happens around Midsummer and coincidentally there is a fairy queen interested in a fool. And there is Esme Weatherwax...

The dimensions that separe the parallel and the parasite worlds are thinner than ever, and some evil creatures are able to cross and attack. But as long as there are witches, love and iron, Lancre will always fight back! Pratchett was a genius. Be happy to live and be your better self. That is sort of the key to life and a happy marriage. Or a maybe a happy marriage that happened a long time ago in a different world.

reviewed Tricky twenty-two by Janet Evanovich (A Stephanie Plum novel)

Janet Evanovich: Tricky twenty-two (2015)

Something big is brewing in Trenton, N.J., and it could blow at any minute. Stephanie …

Review of 'Tricky twenty-two' on 'Goodreads'

Stephanie has a new FTA called Ken Globovic that belongs to the Zeta fraternity at the local university. The dean hates the Zeta and the teacher responsible for them hates the campus in general. No one is telling Stephanie where Globovic is and she is not as wooried about him as she is about what is happening around the fraternity. And why Morelli is looking so sick lately.

As always, I enjoyed this story a lot and I finished the book quickly. Even though the main killer is easy to guess, the whole plot is rather difficult to imagine. I enjoyed Ranger (as always) and a different perspective on Morelli was also interesting. Lula and Grandma Mazur keep up the dialogues and even Stephanie's mum joins in the fun. The Plums never fail to keep me entertained.

David Wong: John Dies at the End (2007)

John Dies at the End is a comic horror novel written by David Wong that …

Review of 'John Dies at the End (John Dies at the End, #1)' on 'Goodreads'

This was one of the weirdest stories I have ever read. David and John are at a party the first time they come across the "soy sauce", which opens the human mind to what is there but our brain refuses to acknowledge. Not sure if they are insane or not, they begin a battle against the dark forces that involve meat monsters, very weird monsters, shadows, insects, nakedness... and a dog that is clearly the most intelligent character in the book (most of the time). At some points the story is dull, but at others it is rather original and compelling. I am torn between 3 or 4 stars, but let the immature jokes and very inadequate song versions win!

Philip Pullman: Subtle Knife (2017, Scholastic India, imusti)

As the boundaries between worlds begin to dissolve, Lyra and her daemon help Will Parry …

Review of 'Subtle Knife' on 'Goodreads'

Lyra arrives in a new parallel world and she is lost on what to do until she meets Will. Will is a strong boy that was forced to grow on his own. They have an important task to fulfil according to dust, but they have no idea of what to expect.

The curse of the middle book is back. Will is an excellent new character and I liked that the story is more focused on him than on Lyra. Having said that, I knew that a thinner book meant it was a bridge between the first and last, big preparations for what it is to come, and that nothing would actually happen. I feel it is getting too big with fighting Gods, armies of angels, spectres and other things but at the same time this book seems pointless except for introducing Will, the weird knife, and hinting that both Lyra …

Philip Pullman: Northern Lights [Paperback] [Mar 05, 2015] Philip Pullman (Paperback, 2016, Scholastic India, imusti)

Review of 'Northern Lights [Paperback] [Mar 05, 2015] Philip Pullman' on 'Goodreads'

Orphan Lyra lives among scholars at Jordan College in Oxford and the life she lives is all she has ever wanted. That changes when she meets Mrs. Coulter and moves to London with her. However, there are kids being kidnapped everywhere who are apparently taken to the North. Lyra wants to go there after her uncle Asriel and find out what is happening.

I was not expecting such an intricate story about growing up and testing your limits. Lyra reminded me a little of [book:Coraline|17061], she is very focused on doing what she feels is right and needs doing. This fantastic world is amazing, I loved the bear Iorek and almost every single character Lyra meets. I am very excited to learn what expects her in the second book.

Darynda Jones: Eleventh Grave in Moonlight (Paperback, 2017, St. Martin's Paperbacks)

"A typical day in the life of Charley Davidson involves cheating husbands, missing people, errant …

Review of 'Eleventh Grave in Moonlight' on 'Goodreads'

Charley is learning to live with the fact that she will not see her daughter for a long time, but that Beep is safe. However, her clients (both departed and alive) need her to be the best she can be. This time she has a new client that was probably abducted by the same people that abducted Reyes. The case takes Charley on a journey about evil and free will. And ends in a big, big cliffhanger.

For some reason, the humour in the dialogues seemed forced in the beginning, too many sentences intertwined and explained when the explaining was not needed. But then the story picked up pace, and the main mystery is very close to Reyes so of course it got my full attention. Probably what I loved more about this book is that Reyes stopped being a know-it-all character, he did not have all the answers and …

Philip Pullman: The Collectors: A His Dark Materials Story (Kindle Single) (2015, Knopf Books for Young Readers)

Review of 'The Collectors: A His Dark Materials Story (Kindle Single)' on 'Goodreads'

The reading by Bill Nighy is amazing but I am at a loss of what really happened in this short story. There are two people talking about a painting of a young woman and a bronze statue of a monkey that seems to always end up where the painting is. I think this one is meant to be read after the main three volumes, even if it happened before. It is a dark story that I am sure I would have enjoyed more had I known what it was actually about.

reviewed Veronica Mars by Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars)

Rob Thomas: Veronica Mars (2015)

"The second Veronica Mars novel, in which she investigates a mysterious crime at The Neptune …

Review of 'Veronica Mars' on 'Goodreads'

Veronica is back and better than ever because... Logan is also back! We learn a little bit more about their relationship and about Logan while Veronica is investigating who abused a woman and left her for dead. The case is complicated, but the whole gang is back to help her solve it.

I enjoyed this book so much more than the previous one! First, there is Logan. And then there is Logan. And also Veronica's case is intricate and mysterious. It has great pace and the rest of the story following the characters' lives unravels beautifully in parallel with the case. It leaves a lot of untied ends that will leave you hoping things do not turn out for worse in Neptune because so much was ominously left open. For all marshmallows at there, this book worth it!
