My favourite genre is fantasy but I also love comedy, which means I am a big fan of Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Neil Gaiman and CK McDonnell. Truth is, I'll read anything!

Review of 'Close encounters of the furred kind' on 'Goodreads'

I was a bit surprised about this book, I thought it was an adventure of a cat with human attributes, but it turns out the "story" is the real life of the author and his cats (I do not read synopsis as you may have guessed already). I have only one cat and even though I do not give him a particular personality, I found myself recognizing a lot of what was happening. I too have travelled by car with a cat for 2h and it was 2h more than it should have been. Moving with a cat and making it the priority of the move makes you believe in hell. The author's sense of humour is witty and I finished the book much quicker than I realized, having bought it mainly because The Bear died and I wanted to contribute with something to the author that made me laugh …

Laura Esquivel: Malinche (Hardcover, 2006, Wheeler Publishing)

Review of 'Malinche' on 'Goodreads'

Terry Pratchett: Witches Abroad (2002)

Review of 'Witches Abroad' on 'Goodreads'

A fairy godmother dies and somewhere in the world a goddaughter is left without one of her fairy godmothers. But is the missing one the good or the bad fairy godmother? Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg do not think Magrat Garlick is able to handle this new business of fairy godmothering by herself, and decide to keep her company on their visit abroad to meet the goddaughter. And make sure she does not marry the prince because no one would want that!

As always, Terry Pratchett delivers a hysterical story with the most beloved witches in the Discworld. This is a book where we learn people should have what they need, and not what they want. And that good people do precisely that. Also that people should not be turned into animals, and that things have a tendency to be turned into pumpkins when a wand is around. I think …

Steve Hockensmith: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dreadfully Ever After (2011, Quirk)

Review of 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dreadfully Ever After' on 'Goodreads'

Mr and Mrs Darcy have been together for 4 years but Elizabeth is not happy. After a particularly baffling confession from Elizabeth, Darcy is dumbfounded and bitten by a zombie. Elizabeth asks her arch-enemy Lady Catherine de Bourgh for help because she is believed to have a mysterious antidote, and there is nothing Elizabeth will not do to cure her husband.

This book was very entertaining. When I first started, I thought it was great that the author had the liberty to choose the story instead of following one of the most beloved ones ([b:Pride and Prejudice and Zombies|5899779|Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, #1)|Seth Grahame-Smith|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1320449653s/5899779.jpg|6072122]), but soon I changed my mind and thought this was inferior to the first. This submissive Elizabeth was not the Elizabeth I had pictured in my mind and things were not going as I hoped for. However, as soon as …

Isabel Allende: City of the Beasts (Large Print) (Paperback, 2002, HarperCollins)

Review of 'City of the Beasts (Large Print)' on 'Goodreads'

London below ia back

Lovely short story that gives us more glimpses into London Below and its mysterious and weird inhabitants. The Marquis got his coat back and it was no easy task to accomplish, but it is a very compelling reading.

Emerson Knight is a geek billionaire that believes something is wrong with his gold and the bank sends intern Riley Moon to calm him down. She has just graduated from Harvard Business and Harvard Law and really wants to succeed in the bank industry. However, she soon realises Knight might be on to something big and she no longer knows who she is really working for.

I enjoyed this story and the characters, it is fast paced and there are some very entertaining moments. From random animal appearances ("the zebras are having a good time") to the impossible-to-surprise aunt Myra. But my favourite thing about the book is the dialogues between Knight and Moon, none of them follows a logical thinking path and they always end a conversation on some weird thoughts. I am looking forward to the second story to find out which adventures await them.

Jonathan L. Howard: Johannes Cabal the Necromancer (Paperback, 2010, Anchor)

Review of 'Johannes Cabal the Necromancer' on 'Goodreads'

Johannes Cabal gave his soul to Satan in exchange for powers that would make him able to defeat death. But the more he researched, the more he realised he needed his soul back to continue his experiments. So he went back to Hell and made a deal where he would get his soul back if he could damn 100 souls in a year with the help of an evil travelling carnival.

There are two main types of books: the "just one more chapter" ones that translate into sleepless nights and the "anti-insomnia" ones that actually make me doze off. This book falls into the second category after a surprising good start. Johannes Cabal is a Harry Dresden wannabe (see [b:Storm Front|47212|Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1)|Jim Butcher|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1419456275s/47212.jpg|1137060]), but lacks all the personality of the latter and dare I say, intelligence. As possibly everyone else who has ever come across this book, I found it because I am an avid follower of the podcast "My dad wrote a porno". The last day was particularly awesome by listening along with everyone else on twitter and commenting the whole experience. I cannot wait for the 3rd series of the podcast and I definitely recommend listening to the book, but by all means avoid reading it! Hehe

Brandon Sanderson: The Final Empire (2006, Tor) No rating

Review of 'The Final Empire (Mistborn, Book 1)' on 'Goodreads'

In the world Vin survives in, ash falls from the sky and streets are filled with dirt and soot. There is no green nor the warmth of sun. The Lord Ruler is the immortal that has controlled the Final Empire for centuries and murdered/enslaved countless people. However, somes slaves are mistborns - people who are able to control metals - and they are preparing to fight back.

I finally finished this book, hurrah! I feel like I spent one century reading about Vin's inner feelings of mistrust towards Humanity in general. However, Vin's world is brilliantly built, allomancy is superbly structured and the characters are profound and easy to like. But I am pretty sure this book could have been told in 300 pages and no one would miss the other 200. I am torn because the whole idea behind the book deserves 5 starts but the actual storytelling only …

Review of 'Ms. Marvel' on 'Goodreads'

I had to force some "reading breaks" to avoid reading the whole volume in one sitting. I love that we keep seeing Kamala growing into her powers and character, this time it was more focused on her mind and heart. Being a teenager is hard on the love life, even when you are not a Muslim superhero. I felt the plot was a little less intricate than the previous two, but equally satisfying. I love this series and I will reread this volume to be sure I did not miss a thing.

Brutha is the definition of a simple man who prefers someone else to do the thinking. He believes in the god Om and he believes Om brings peace and justice through the arms of the Quisition, particularly through the fingers of its leader Vorbis. Brutha's life is turned upside down when his god Om starts speaking to him in the form of an insignificant turtle, and Vorbis takes him along on a diplomatic mission to Ephebe - a dangerous place full of ideas and thinkers.

In a perfect world, kids would read this book in class and discuss every passage. Learn why it is important to ask things and build personal opinions, why they should not let other people tell them what to do, what to think, and what is right or wrong. Learn to be kind, but also understand when they are being lied to, even when that lie …

Review of 'Charmed and Dangerous' on 'Goodreads'

Bobbie Faye's brother has a habit of getting himself into bad-women situations, but it is particularly bad when he is kidnapped by a gangster. Bobbie Faye that is currently taking care of her niece has to save him, while running from the cops, the FBI, ex-boyfriends, news reporters and a social services' assistant.

This book was suggested by Goodreads' algorithm since I like Evanovich's Stephanie Plum. I was utterly surprised to find this over the top in comparison, I never thought of Plum books as toned down but somehow they feel more realistic and I like their humour better. This was an entertaining action story though I missed being introduced to the characters and confused them a lot. The suspense did not work at all, and the end was written to make me buy the second book, which I did not enjoy since I am afraid the suspense is again …

Review of 'Top secret twenty-one' on 'Goodreads'

Stephanie Plum is looking for Jimmy Poletti but ends up finding corpses, and so she uses Briggs as bait to try and get to Poletti since he was his accountant. Grandma Mazur is more worried about her bucket list, which involves Morelli's grandma Bella and therefore might be more dangerous than finding Poletti. But the most dangerous case is with Ranger that has a a very big radioactive problem in his hands.

This book possibly has the most intricate stories of all of Plum's books so far. Stephanie has a lot of FTAs, and her main case - Jimmy Poletti - is also Morelli's and part of a bigger network that connects all characters. Usually I do not even pay attention to most names because they come and go, but in this one I had to keep tabs on who was who. Ranger has his one big problem, which actually …

Molly Harper: Where the Wild Things Bite (Paperback, 2016, Pocket Books)

Review of 'Where the Wild Things Bite' on 'Goodreads'

Anna is sort of a hermit that lives for her job surrounded by old books, until a very valuable one comes to her and Anna believes it is her duty to give it back by hand to its rightful owner and not by courier. So even though she is an agoraphobe, germophobe and a lot more adjectives that end in "phobe", she bravely gets on a plane to Half-Moon Hollow to deliver that precious book to Jane Jameson. And then her plane crashes.

I could not put this book down, but I am afraid I was expecting more - probably because whole idea of having a germophobe lost in the woods promised a lot of laugh out moments, but failed short. They basically walked and slept, where were the savage animals, the lost tribes, eating disgusting things, hazardous survival ideas, meeting amazons,...? All those absolutely ridiculous but perfectly plausible scenes …
